3 Apr, 2019 – The second wine of Batailley is well crafted this year with blackcurrant and blackberry character, as well as black olives. Full-bodied and tannic. Flavorful finish.
3 Apr, 2018
A ripe and delicious second wine with serious density and round tannins. Flavorful finish already.
22 Dec, 2019
This is really nicely done with plenty of blackberries, dark chocolate and toasted oak. Medium to full body. Needs to come together. A blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 2% cabernet franc. Second wine of Château Batailley.
05 Apr 2019
This is deeper, and with more evident dark fruits than Lynch Moussas, as is often the case even though a second wine. There are definite comparisons with 2015 here, in terms of accessibility and warmth, this is juicy but controlled, a touch austere right now but with flexible tannins alongside hedgerow fruits – plenty to enjoy. A yield of 52hl/ha.
27th Apr 2018
Composed of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Lions de Batailley is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with a nose of gorgeous plums, black cherries and blackberries with touches of cinnamon and vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and refreshing with firm yet silky tannins and a lively lift on the finish.
2019
A light dash of vanilla leads off here, followed quickly by pure cassis and cherry fruit flavors. Reveals a sleek graphite edge on the finish.
4 Apr, 2017
A beautiful second wine with a chocolate and coffee-bean character as well as currants. Medium to full body and soft and velvety tannins. Very structured.
20 Jan, 2019
The blackcurrant and blueberry aromas pop out of the glass. Medium to full body, linear and refined tannins and a currant, coffee and smoke aftertaste. Second wine of Batailley.

I love the bright, clean fruits here. It’s extremely tight and full of vigour – not exactly easy drinking, but you get the shot of menthol freshness, and the fruit is clearly on the rise. A good quality example of the vintage.
28th Apr 2017
The 2016 Lions de Batailley is the third vintage of the Deuxième vin from Château Batailley. A blend of 28% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 70% Cabernet Sauvignon—a mixture of young vines but mostly a winery selection representing over 30% of the total production. It offers plenty of blackberry and bilberry on the nose infused with tobacco and pronounced graphite aromas. The palate is quite concentrated on the entry with some hard tannins marking the entry. This feels firm in the mouth despite the contribution of the Merlot, saline and a little spicy towards the finish that has good grip. Maybe I would have just dialed down the new oak here, as it feels a little conspicuous on the aftertaste but that may well be assimilated by the time of bottling.
2019
This takes a relatively gentle and perfumy approach, with slightly high-toned cherry, red currant and damson plum fruit, inlaid with sleek tannins and hints of sandalwood and cedar.
Souple et harmonieux, bon volume immédiatement accessible.
2 Feb, 2018
Some impressive presence and depth to this second wine of Château Batailley. It offers ample oak spices and earthy notes amid aromas of raspberries and red cherry compote. The palate is energetic and nicely arranged with smooth tannins that cast a gently grainy texture through the finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 6% cabernet franc amd 1% petit verdot.
29 Apr, 2016
The new second wine of Batailley shows finesse and sense of place. Spice and dark fruit character. Fine tannins.
This has perfumed alder and sandalwood notes leading the way for soft-edged plum and black cherry fruit, picking up a light tobacco hint through the finish. Offers more aroma than stuffing in the end.
13 Feb, 2017
Very perfumed and beautiful with orange blossom and currants. Medium body, fine tannins and a stone and nut aftertaste. Tangy acidity. First year second wine made. Drink now or hold.

The 2014 Lions de Batailley was the first vintage albeit one produced in a small quantity as a test, according to proprietor Philippe Castèja. It has an attractive bouquet with dense blackberry, crushed strawberry, bay leaf and cedar scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, grippy in the mouth with good density and freshness on the graphite-tinged finish. Frankly, it is as good as some of the Grand Vins from the 1990s.

Solid, with a tangy iron note running from the start through the core of black currant and bitter cherry fruit. Ends with a light graphite edge.
Belle harmonie, charnu et sèveux, très réussi.
