James Suckling : 95-96

Beautiful fruit with currants and blackberries, as well as notes of walnuts and chocolate. So much blackberry fruit here. Aromatic. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine tannins on the deep and structured palate. Racy and long finish.

Markus Del Monego MW : 96

Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Very densely woven nose with aroma reminiscent of blackcurrants, blackcurrant spurs, ripe blackberries and elderberries, fine toasting, subtle oak. A wine with elegance, purity and great freshness, precision and purity. On the palate well balanced with ripe tannins, finely grained, complemented by juicy fruit quoting the nose, excellent structure and length. Another great Batailley.

Vinum : 93-95

Georgina Hindle, Decanter : 97

Vibrant and intense colour in the glass, richly scented, floral and perfumed, open and inviting. Intense and concentrated, the fruit is dark and ripe but there’s no hint of over ripeness here and instead you get cool blue fruits, chalky tannins and minty freshness with accents of liquorice, coffee, tobacco, cedar spice and clove. Tannins are clearly at the fore, giving the structure and the frame while the juicy acidity gives the energy and life. Still on the serious side, not tense so much as there’s good persistence, it’s lean and streamlined, but refined in a spiced and mineral way. Gorgeous terroir markers, lovely detail and precision, you can feel they haven’t worked too much or tried too hard. It carries the signature of the estate in the serious structure, it’s a big wine, there’s such power here but so well controlled and delivered. Razor sharp, focussed and persistent. A gorgeous 2022, well executed and will be a clear success.

Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider : 95-97

Licorice, flowers, mint, peach, currants, blackberries, tobacco and wet forest floor aromatics create the nose. The palate is rich, supple, creamy, fresh, and loaded with sweet, blackberries, white pepper, plums, currants and spice. The wine is full-bodied, round, and concentrated, with a long endnote leaving you with peppery licorice, spearmint, and creme de cassis on the backend.

Jancis Robinson : 17+

Blackcurrant notes with a graphite edge. Subdued power with length and persistence. Tannins finely honed. Freshness as well. A powerful but refined statement. One of the best yet from this estate.

Bernard Burtschy : 95-96

Yves Beck : 94-96

James Suckling : 93-94

Subtle aromas of currants and fresh flowers with some tar and graphite. Medium-bodied with firm tan- nins and bright acidity. Very typical and bright for Pauillac. Linear and fine. Solid and tight. Will age nicely.

Neal Martin, Vinous : 92-94

The 2021 Batailley was picked September 30 to October 15 and matured in 55-60% new oak. It has a well-defined, focused bouquet, a quintessential Pauillac nose of black fruit infused with cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of black pepper on the entry and delivers good depth and fine grip. This is a Batailley with commendable stuffing for the vintage and it fans out with guto on the finish.

Bernard Burtschy : 96-97

Yves Beck : 95-97

James Suckling : 94-95

Aromas of black and red currants as well as orange. Ink pot. Cassis bush. Bramble berry. Graphite. Full-bodied yet tight and back-loaded with intense tannins, but they turn soft and polished. Very classic structure. Reminds me of a top Batailley from the 1980s, like 1985, but much more precise and clear

Markus Del Monego : 95

Terres de Vins : 95

Jane Anson, Decanter : 94

This is an excellently approachable wine while still retaining a feeling of aloof Pauillac confidence. Inky in colour with savoury black fruits, juice and graphite as with Haut Bages Monpelou, very juicy on the finish with well-defined black pepper spice. An excellent second wine, with estate character

Notes & Commentaires

James Suckling : 95-96

A very cabernet-driven red with currants, light cedar, vanilla and flowers. It’s full-bodied, tight and powerful. Impressive finish. Classic. 74% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 1% petit verdot.

Markus del Monego : 95

Jeff Leve The Wine Cellar Insider : 94-96.

Cassis, vanilla, cigar smoke, tobacco and forest leaf scents kick off the perfume. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and tannic. The tannins are ripe, round and refined, allowing the wine to build and expand while it lingers. If it continues to develop along these lines, it will prove to be an even better wine, deserving a higher score. Tasted Jun 8, 2020.

Roger Voss Wine Enthusiast : 95.

Barrel Sample. This classed growth estate has seriously improved in the past 10 years. Today, it is producing great structured Cabernet Sauvignon with considerable richness as well as impressive long-term tannins. Showing concentration and depth of flavor, the wine is going to age for many years to come.

Bernard Burtschy : 94-95.

Neal Martin Vinous : 94-96.

The 2019 Batailley, picked 16 September until 7 October, has an impressive bouquet with plenty of concentration, though it manages to remain the traditional classic style associated with this Pauillac estate. Blackberry, forest floor and freshly rolled tobacco burst from the glass, demonstrating fine purity and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. I was most impressed by the balance and poise, almost as if it has a newfound sophistication very evident on the finish. This is a superb Batailley, one of the finest that I have encountered in recent years.

This is very structured and dense with lots of fruit and tannin, yet it’s tight and long. Linear and racy. Muscular.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown The Wine Advocate : 92-94

The 2018 Batailley is deep garnet-purple in color and offers up bright Morello cherries, black raspberries and redcurrant notes over a cassis and plum preserves core with a waft of dried mint. Full-bodied with a good core of juicy fruit, it has approachable, ripe tannins and a lively lift to the finish.

The crème de cassis is strong here and it’s the perfect match for the full-bodied, ripe, round, dark, fresh, spicy red berry palate. The tannins are powerful, yet refined, which is perfect for all that juicy, peppery fruit in the finish. If you can wait and give this wine 7-9 years or more before popping a cork, you will experience all of its true Pauillac character.

Markus Del Monego MW : 95

Blended of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Batailley gives profound notes of crème de cassis, preserved plums and licorice over a core of espresso, tapenade and Marmite toast. This is straight and transparent with currant and dark-chocolate aromas. Orange peel, light tar and violets. Medium to full body. Gorgeous core of dark fruit and polished tannins that push out the edge of the wine, giving it a seamless texture. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Filled with Pauillac signature of method and cassis on the nose, this feels polished and textured, layered with liquorice and coffee beans, with smoked, burnished oak flavours that help elongate the palate. Very dark crimson. Intense animal notes on sweet cassis. A little more diffuse than the two wines from Mouton that flank it in this tasting (Chx d’Armailhac and Clerc Milon 2017) but a very solid effort. Not exactly subtle but it should please bordeaux lovers in the medium term.

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Well concentrated nose, rich aroma reminiscent of ripe plums, black cherries, excellent toasting aroma and fine hints of vanilla, cloves and gingerbread. The 2016 Batailley is a blend of 12% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 85% Cabernet Sauvignon cropped at 50h hectoliters per hectare. Matured in 60% new oak. It has an intense graphite infused bouquet with fine delineation, some freshly picked Pauillac mint coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that grip the mouth insistently; with graphite and tobacco-infused black fruit dominating, this a classically styled Batailley in the vein of previous vintages with the elegance coming through towards the finish. This is one of those wines that grows on you, perhaps not as easy or as charming to taste as other Pauillac 2016s at this stage, but knowing this property well, I know how it can blossom when it matters, which is when you and I drink it.

Medium-bodied palate with refined tannin structure and sophisticated texture. Lovely flavour profile of cedar, blackberries, red flowers, and dark chocolate. The 2015 Batailley is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot cropped at 48 hl/ha picked between 17-30 September. Matured in around 55-60% new oak, it has a very focused, intense bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and mineral notes, perhaps a little MaRené Gabrielaux-like in style as those violets blossom with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity, a touch of white pepper here lending edginess, gradually building to a very composed and structured finish. This is an excellent Batailley, ameliorated by the introduction of a second wine, that continues the upswing in quality over the last six or seven years. I would not be surprised if this settles at the top of my banded score once in bottle.

Mar 31, 2018 – A showy mint note leads off, followed by a flash of ganache before giving way to a core of steeped black currant and fig fruit. A strong charcoal edge through the finish gives this texture and length, while a bay leaf note adds freshness. There’s lots to like in this old-school version.

On first nose this hits you with cedary oak. It achieves balance after a few minutes in the glass, as you start to enjoy the rich black fruits and coffee bean aspect to the palate, but the winery seems to be overpowering the vineyard here. This is a modern style 2015 that can be enjoyed earlier than many other Pauillacs in this vintage, and it is often good value too. The first vintage with a second wine, Les Lions de Batailley, which perhaps explains why this feels just a little more supercharged than in previous years.

Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting the château, the 2010 Batailley may well have been the best wine in a tasting that encompassed three centuries of winemaking at the estate. The nose offers outstanding delineation and mineralité. It positively fizzes in the glass with all that coiled-up energy, ladling out vivid blackberry and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, but it is the detail and precision that achieves a level that makes the 2010 a benchmark for the Pauillac estate. It sashays towards a tensile, tar and graphite-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. This is destined for long-term aging insofar that its quality will not be widely appreciated for many years. The 2008, which was harvested between October 2-15, is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It exhibits Batailley’s well-known tannic profile, but the high level of polyphenols in this vintage equates to sweet tannins and no astringency whatsoever. A deep purple color is followed by sweet aromas of creme de cassis, forest floor, damp earth, licorice, and a subtle hint of wood. Part of the Batailley vineyard is only 800 meters from the St.-Julien border, but this is a classic Pauillac. The 2008 should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and last for 25-30. Proprietor Philippe Casteja built a beautiful new winemaking facility in 2006, and he is now working closely with the famed Professor of Oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Denis Dubourdieu. The resulting wines reveal sweeter tannins without losing the structure, richness, or aging potential this wine typically possesses. The high tannin levels and backward character found in older vintages made the wines nearly unapproachable, but that has all changed.

Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 2005 Batailley continues to be an excellent Pauillac that I suspect is overshadowed by some of its more illustrious and, let’s not forget, more expensive neighbors. Deep ruby/purple with a relatively evolved bouquet of plums, cherries, and black currants, this wine is classy, with solidly constructed flavors of red and black fruits, moderate tannin, but a slightly abbreviated finish without a great deal of depth.

Deep crimson. Good, vibrant scent. Lively, classic claret. Very dense and chewy. Should develop well. Very positive.

Pretty plum and toasted oak character to this young wine. Medium- to full-bodied, with impressive currants and ripe tannins on the palate. Long. One of the surprises of the vintage.

Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 2000 Batailley displayed youthful vigor on the nose with boysenberry and damson fruit, incense and iodine. As I remarked when I last tasted this in 2011, there is an opulence here that this estate rarely produced up until this period. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin; this bottle is more backward than others, with firm tannin providing sturdy backbone. It remains a « burly » Pauillac for the vintage, and it is certainly masculine in style. Then again, that is a leitmotif of the millennial vintage. As such, I can envisage this mellowing in four to six year’s time, whereupon it will have the substance to give drinking pleasure over many years. Tasted April 2016.

So much white truffle and ripe fruit here with meat, cedar and berry character. Full and very rich. Decadent. Delicious now.

This has fully entered a second phase, with loads of cedar and alder notes leading the way for dried currant and lightly mulled blackberry fruit flavors. Lovely sanguine and tobacco accents fill in on the finish. A classically refined aged Bordeaux. Blind 2000 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2015).

This has a lot of easy to like Pauillac charm with its cedar, cassis, tobacco and earthy profile. Tannic, giving the wine a backbone and the ability to age, but the tannins are not overwhelming, this classic wine is fine to drink now, but another 2-3 years will add more complexity to the wine.
